Issue date: 10/8/07 Section: News
Attending the upcoming job fair on Oct. 10 is just one step toward a future full of rewarding employment. A transcript full of good grades is important, but good grooming and preparation is a must for gaining employment in today's human resource driven companies.

Henderson's Center for Career Development is the best place to prepare for the series of human resource contacts necessary to land that well paying job.

Services offered by the Career Center are personal career counseling, interviewing assistance, mock interviewing, resume preparations, on-campus interviewing, career fairs, national and local job listings, graduate school searches and internet tool usage.

To help prepare the student or alumni for transition into the workforce, the Career Center offers virtual job interviews. The job interviews help to create a state of interview readiness by raising confidence and removing anxiety.

The mock interviews help the participant understand his role during an actual interview. Self awareness in the applicant is developed to help recognize defective and ineffective responses. Tactful responses to legal and illegal questions asked during interviews are also covered.

Video training in salary negotiations teaches the job applicant how to evaluate the current job market and negotiate the best possible salary. The 50-minute video shows the interviewee how to have confidence while negotiating salary and benefits.

Questions from and reciprocal responses to the interviewer about salary requirements are also taught. Skills for researching salary in differing job fields are discussed. Also covered is how to negotiate when a salary offer is lower than expected.

Workshops on writing a resume and cover letter are also offered by the Career Center. The workshops cover content, format, design, common mistakes and some things that many employers look for in resumes and cover letters.

Another workshop is called "How to Get the Job You Want." This workshop attempts to help the seeker find internships, part time jobs, summer jobs, and full time positions along with how to obtain needed experience for future job openings. Evaluating benefit packages offered by employers and relocation negotiations are also discussed.
