Upon reading your editorial about campus poker tournaments and fundraisers I realized that KSWH somehow got clumped together in a rant against copycats. I would just like to go on the record to say that KSWH held a poker tournament last year (which was very successful in station promotion) and decided to do it again this year based on student and community interest.

The tournaments are not fundraisers (unless you consider that some of the funds are used to pay the FCC lawyer the station keeps on retainer to ENSURE we are always working within the bounds of legality) nor are they advertised in such a way. We also make it a community effort with sponsors such as SAB, Gamestop, Wal-Mart, S&S Music, etc. We are also not selfish.

We conduct fundraisers as well. Toys for Tots, Red Cross and the Arkadelphia Humane Society have all benefited a little - I wish it could be more - from work we have done at KSWH and HTV.

I truly understand your point about originality and I agree. I also agree however that the town of Arkadelphia can be apathetic to creativity and uniqueness at times and we at the station prefer to conduct promotions and contests we know will get the people there. When we have fundraisers, we advertise them as fundraisers. When we have tournaments, we advertise them as tournaments.

When faced with the decision to go with what works or something brand new, we often lean towards the idea of a proven formula.

As far as the poker tournament, yes we copied. We copied the trend that has been sweeping the country the last several years in the form of television shows and online tournaments through many different Web sites.

We will continue to give people what we think they want based on observation and research.
