This was not the first time Gilpin's work has been nationally distributed.
A photo from Gilpin's set design for "Titus Andronicus" was published in a copy of USITT Design Exhibition 2006 magazine. Gilpin also received a 2007 Individual Artist Fellowship from the Arkansas Arts Council. Gilpin has also designed for the Minnesota Repertory Theatre, Emporia Summer Rep, University of Central Arkansas, the University of Arkansas at Monticello. He is planning on staying at the dorms at UCA this summer to design for the Arkansas Shakespearian Festival.
Gilpin acknowledges that his perspective of what he wanted to do in life was turned around by his role model, Newlin. There is a life-size picture of Newlin in Gilpin's office.
"I wish I could tell my old professor," Gilpin said, referring to being featured in the newest edition of Scene Design and Stage Lighting.
Now Gilpin, following closely in Newlin's footsteps, is a role model for many of Henderson's theatre students here.
"Mr. Gilpin is an inspiration to us all," said Sarah Burns, sophomore theatre major.
"He is like a father figure," said Josh Simpson, junior theatre major.
Gilpin is now working on the set of Henderson's production of "The Dining Room," which is scheduled to open Oct. 9th.
