I'm fed up with going to movies where the trailers and critics promise hardcore action packed fighting, and when I get there, the fighting lasts a minute tops. When is the last time an action movie had any action in it?
The last good action movie I saw that actually delivered was Shoot Em Up. That movie had everything, rock soundtrack, mindless sex, and a boatload of violence. An action movie that good hasn't been made since the late 80's and early 90's.
I know what you're thinking, name one movie that didn't deliver the goods. I'll name you three. Let's start it off right with The Dark Knight. Now don't get me wrong, this was the best movie of the year, but it focused more on the drama than anything.
I was expecting a knock down drag out fight between Batman and the Joker, what I got was about 2 minutes of fighting mixed in with dialogue.
When Joker was standing in the streets, waiting for Batman I was like "aw yeah, here we go." But what happens? Batman just drives his stupid little Batpod motorcycle and misses Joker by a country mile. That wasn't a fight. That was a merchandising ploy for the kiddies. The fight near the end did the same thing. I was expecting Joker to have an accidental death during a fight but I guess that's too much to ask for. I was going "what the hell?
They should be killing each other, not talking!" Needless to say, the trailer built me up for a brawl, but left me hanging, just like the Joker at the end of the movie.
Going back a few years, I was excited about the Kill Bill movies. The first one had everything, and probably the bloodiest fight scene ever (but they HAD to black and white it). It's very rare you see a female lead do so much damage that you just can't get enough.
Then the second one came around. It starts off slow with more talk, but that's the way Tarantino rolls. Skipping ahead, after the obligatory flashbacks and story development, we FINALLY see the Bride and Elle cross swords, literally, but it had a surprise ending when the Bride pulled Elle's other eye out. I was disappointed at first but then laughed at her misfortune. I knew the final fight would not let me down now that the joke fight is past.
