After watching an episode of Late Night With Conan O'Brien, senior mass media major Thurman Jones found himself flipping through the channels, stopping at ESPN Sports Center.
As he watched the athlete highlights, Jones began to have thoughts of getting back into shape. "I (saw) a Bowflex infomercial and thought, 'Everyone has Bowflex; I wanted something different,'" said Jones.
The next infomercial introduced a product that Jones never heard of. The product was P90X: A 90-day exercise boot camp Jones found to be so intriguing that there was no hesitation to summon his credit card.
When Jones received his new workout program he did not use it. It stayed in its package for several months before he ever touched it.
Jones became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. in spring of 2008. He was 21 years old at time, weighing in at 232 pounds.
"Most college students go through that phase where they want to party and they want to drink," said Jones. He was doing a lot of drinking, and after the party there was a lot of late-night eating.
"I wasn't watching what I ate, and the only exercise was from stepping with my frat brothers," said Jones. "I couldn't keep up with the steps, and that's when I decided it was time to make a change." Jones reached a size 38 and decided to put some use to his previously purchased P90X.
In November of 2008 Jones began to implement the P90X exercise regimen into his lifestyle. "After about two weeks of using P90X, I knew that it was going to work for me," said Jones. P90X has several different levels of training to choose from giving the option of setting one's own pace and level of fitness desired.
"It took true discipline and dedication to lose this weight," said Jones. "It wasn't easy." He followed the P90X nutrition guidelines to the best of his ability.
"The only thing I didn't eat was squid; didn't know where to find squid around here," said Jones.
