Non-traditional students choosing to attend school, work and raise a family will benefit from this new addition to Clark County's community. The daycare facility accepts childcare vouchers and rates range from $7 to $16. It is located at 25 McClellan and can be reached at 245-2555. Single parent scholarships are also available for Clark County college students.
Students can be awarded up to $500 a semester depending on part- or full-time status. Students should contact student support service counselor Brenda Hagerich at 230-5474.
The CCSP is currently working in conjunction with different foundations to expand the amount of scholarships available to college students in Clark County. Southern Bancorp offers a program that can be very beneficial to college students looking for alternative ways to pay for college or other expenses.
The Individual Development Account is a program designed to encourage saving and aid students in their financial future. Students sign up with a commitment to at least six months of attending one class per month for one hour. The class teaches the student about such things as financing, credit reporting and the necessary steps when trying to purchase a home. You are required to open a savings account and deposit a minimum of $20.
"Once the amount reaches $660, the program is going to match it like three to one, it's like two thousand-some-odd dollars," said Loe. "Then if you say 'I need you to write that over to Henderson for my tuition or I need to purchase a laptop through the bookstore,' for whatever the case may be for education, the money is yours." This is a great and easy way to get money for educational purposes.
"So you save $660, attend six one hour classes, It's a no brainer," said Loe. Students also have the option to pay the required savings in a lump sum. "There are at least sixty students and we are trying to reach a hundred this year," said Loe. This program is not only for college students, it can be used for purchasing a home and starting a business.
