On Oct. 20, Gov. Mike Beebe informed Arkansans that there would be a budget decrease of $100 million which would affect not only state-funded campuses but also state police, prisons and the health department.
This is the same effect being felt in every state across the country.
"We will more than likely see another budget cut before the end of this fiscal year," said Bobby Jones, vice president for finance and administration. "I need all the help I can get from this next cut coming."
The main topics discussed during the meeting included how the university can strive to increase graduation rates, effectively raise tuition and improve the rate of enrollment.
"We are one of two universities to have a decrease in enrollment," said Jones. "UCA is the other school."
One thing that would have to be kept in mind when it comes to matters concerning enrollment is that schools such as SAU with higher enrollment receive less state funding.
"There are more and moredictating and mandating powers," said Jones.
Other members present included SGA representative Jeff Bailey and Vice President for Student Services Gail Stephens.
"We have been very conservative with the number of students living in the dorms versus the number of students with meal plans," said Jones.
In fact, there has been an increase of students living on campus this year with improvements in Residence Life including weekly programs and facility enhancements.
Jones also discussed with the committee slight increases in health insurance premiums, utility costs and workers' salaries.
"This reduction will not impact any departmental supplies and services accounts nor any travel accounts," said Jones.
