It's a new year, and with the new year comes the start of the official term for Henderson's Staff Senate. Their first meeting was Jan. 13. Though it was the first meeting, it was filled with the discussion of big issues such as budget, lighting and driving safety on campus.

Teresa Porter, newly elected President-elect, presided over the meeting. After the meeting was called to order, Porter openned with a speech to the Senate.

"After speaking with Dr. Welch, he made it clear that it was important to him to have a strong Staff Senate, and when I look around at the members, I see that we have a strong Senate," said Porter.

She followed by having all the members present introduce themselves. The Senate has 13 new members. The new members include: from Academic Affairs, Janet Fant, Pam Perez, Katrina Rogers; from Custodial, Joyce Ray and Tasha Wright; from Physical Plant, Calvin Francis and Tony Keene; from President's area, Jackie Inouye and Deborah Sesser and from Student Services, Calvin Johnson, Lakesha Mattin, Willica McClure and Alicia Robertson. All Senators can hold their positions for a term of two official years.

After introductions, the Senate reviewed over the minutes from the last meeting, went over the Senate constitution and the member's responsibilities and gave the Senate financial report. Then Porter stood and gave the president's report. She openned her report with speaking on the second budget cut that had just been announced from the State Senate.

President Charles Welch had just sent an email on Jan. 11 announcing this decision to the faculty and staff. In the email, President Welch laid out the plans for absorbing the budget cut.

"We do believe we are going to be able to cover these cuts without any program or personnel reductions or personnel benefits reductions," said President Welch in the email.

Also in the report Porter stated that the Sturgis foundation will be donating the money to change out all the globes on campus along with adding some new benches.
