AriAnnah Edwards was shaking.
The freshman business education major, was so nervous
that she had to fight the shaking in order to step up in front of all the eyes that were set upon her, but she felt that she had to do this for herself.
As she opened her mouth, she started to sing "The Way" by Jill Scott.
"Really what I was thinking about when I was in there, was my best friend Victorya who passed away last year," Edwards said.
"I said to myself, 'OK Victorya,
help me please,' and I felt she did. I felt that I did a good job.
"I am not saying that I think I made it. I'm just saying
I did better than I ever did before."
The Student Activities Board (SAB) is making a big comeback from 2004 Henderson
Idol Auditions.
This year students have a chance to win $1,500 and to sing in an open audition.
"After last year's Talent Show, that's when we realized
it would be a big hit to do because with the talent show, the Lecture Hall was packed out, standing room only," Nicole Kelly, junior business education major and the president of SAB, said.
"So we figured, if we could do that every week, we would get good crowd participation."
"I was really glad and thankful
that I could win $1,500 off of playing just one song, 'I Love to Praise Him,' on my saxophone," Sam Sanders, junior sociology major and last year's 2009 Talent Show winner, said.
Similar to American Idol, the top 10 winners will be announced
no later than Feb. 9 and will get the opportunity
to move on to the next round.
Henderson Idol will start Feb. 23 in the Lecture Hall.
With the exception of spring break, each week on Tuesday, SAB will be auditioning
the contesters and eliminating each person until
it comes down to the top four.
Students will then be able to cast their votes.
The finale will be April 6 at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Hall.
"As of now we have seen a lot of talent out there and people coming out and supporting
what we are trying to do," Akilah McGriff, freshman
family and consumer science major and also member
of SAB, said.
McGriff judged pageants and tryouts, and she knows what kind of talent ability to look for.
"I do encourage people to follow their dream, but please do ask somebody before
you come on stage or come in front of somebody and sing.
"It's really all in confidence. If you come confident, be yourself and you know what you are going after, then you will be OK," McGriff said.
As American Idol Judge Paula Abdul once said in an interview, "Find your own unique sound; don't be a sound-alike."
Junior business education major Shanetra Sneed said, "If I close my eyes and pray, then once I start singing, I know everything will be OK."
