Paul Dini, writer for comics
and cartoons based on the DC Comics line of characters,
spoke by speaker phone to the Henderson Comics Arts Club.
He's had a huge influence on American television over the past 15 years. He's been a writer and often a producer of animated shows, including
"Star Wars: The Clone Wars," "Batman: The Brave and the Bold," "Batman: The Animated Series" and has been a consultant and story editor for over 20 episodes of "Lost." He took the time to answer their questions for well over an hour.
Q: (Comics Arts Club): What are you working on right now?
A: (Paul Dini): Boy, everything!
As far as comics, I'm doing three books for DC. One is called "Streets of Gotham" that Batman is in but not the main star. It's more about other people and villains. I'm also doing a book called "Gotham City Sirens," which has three villainesses
working together: Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn.
They've ended up becoming
housemates more out of necessity than liking each other because Gotham has become a much scarier place, so pairing the three women up makes sense and it's fun to rub these diverse personalities together and see what erupts out of the situations. So I'm having a lot of fun with that.
In May, I start working on Zatanna, which is about a female
magician who's been an important character for DC in the past 40 years. It's more about her day-to-day life. I've got about the first year's worth written out. We've got terrific artwork on the book.
Q: What about outside of comics?
A: I'm working on a new TV series coming out this fall called "Power Prep," which I created for the Cartoon Network.
It's kind of a change of pace for Cartoon Network because it's not a cartoon; it's an hour-long drama. We start shooting that in April in Vancouver.
It's a prep school where genius kids that are having trouble on the outside will find themselves suddenly whisked away to this extraordinary school where there's no way to leave the school.
